DIY Garage Door Repair: When to Do It Yourself and When to Call a Professional

We know what it’s like reading blogs of businesses and tradespeople: DYI is always a big no-no. They’ll say that you should never try anything yourself, you’ll void the warranty, you’ll destroy your door, you’ll hurt yourself, you’ll extinguish the sun, blah, blah, blah.

And while there’s plenty you shouldn’t try yourself when it comes to garage doors, there are actually a few things we encourage all garage door owners to get into the habit of doing.

Here, The Garage Door Guys explain DIY door repair – when to do it yourself, and when to call the professionals.

DIY repairs – things you can do yourself

Most businesses will tell you that you need them for absolutely every little thing to do with garage door maintenance. Actually, that’s not 100% true. Here are some things we encourage you to DIY when it comes to garage doors:

  • Visual inspections
One of the best things you can do yourself is a regular visual inspection. Get into the habit of checking in on your garage door once every 3 or so months. Check to see if your torsion spring shows any signs of wear, if there’s anything blocking your tracks, or if there are any rollers that look misaligned. Check the condition of your weather seal, too. By doing this, you’re minimising the risk of a garage door failure, possibly preventing a serious accident. If you spot anything, then you should call a professional immediately.
  • Cleaning
Keeping your garage door clean is another task you can do on your own. Wipe down or high-pressure clean your garage door exterior every 3 months. Remove cobwebs and leaves from areas of importance, like your tracks and rollers. By keeping your door clean, you’re extending your door’s lifespan and taking care of its essential components.

Professional services – when to call The Garage Door Guys

And now, we come to things you should never try at home, leaving them in the hands of the qualified professionals at The Garage Door Guys:

  • Repairs
Repairs should always be left to a professional technician. This includes anything to do with the rollers, tracks, torsion spring and opener.
  • Lubrication
Lubrication may seem simple enough, but there’s an art to it. Lubricate too much, and you risk attracting dust, dirt and foreign objects. Not enough lubricant, and you risk serious damage to your garage door’s components.
  • Replacements
Yep, this is an obvious one – but never try to replace a garage door on your own. Always call a professional!
